This is two-year-old Sonia, whose mum, Madelina, endured a very difficult life.

When Madelina arrived at the Women’s Crisis Centre with Sonia and her sibling, they were facing homelessness, and she was struggling with addiction. Her own childhood had been marked by unimaginable trauma. She grew up with parental addiction, her mother was killed and she was made homeless by her father at just 14. With so much pain in her past, she had little support or guidance to help her step into motherhood.

Life for this family was full of hardship. Poverty meant even the essentials were hard to come by, and moments of joy - like celebrating a child’s birthday - were out of reach.

Since coming to the centre, Madelina has received the help she needed to overcome her addiction, and the encouragement and support to grow into the loving, capable parent her children need and deserve.

Recently, the centre helped Madelina organise a special birthday celebration for Sonia, complete with gifts, a cake, and new friends to share the day with. For this family, it was more than just a party; it was a step toward healing, stability, and creating happy memories together.
