A Closer Look at Homelessness

The causes of homelessness are largely universal but sometimes they are specific to the culture. Our projects highlight the main causes in Russia…

• Living hand-to-mouth (extremely low wages)

• Lost passports (Russia-specific identification documents)

• Domestic violence and family disputes (often involving addiction)

• Old age and ill health (a burden on family members)

• Having ‘city’ aspirations (common among orphanage leavers)

• Being an orphan (lack of post-orphanage support)

Ivan, an orphan, became homeless due to cruel and opportunistic foster carers. 18- year-old Ivan lost his parents in a tragic car accident and was raised by foster carers who were motivated by money. When payments for Ivan stopped, they abandoned him. Believing he was enrolled at the college and that an apartment was arranged for him, he was instructed ‘to find work’.  After two days he discovered there was no apartment or college and he had nowhere to go. Finding the Men’s Crisis Centre online, he reached out and they welcomed him in. Now, with a safe place to stay, Genya is helping Ivan work through his trust issues, relationship challenges, and limited education on his path to independence.
