A Fresh Start for Yusif

In Russia, life for many pensioners is extremely difficult. Minimum monthly pensions are set at subsistence levels for a region. Across Russia the average is £163* monthly, while utility bills cost £45 to £95* per month. After essentials and medication, the elderly are left with little for food or daily needs - so most must keep working to survive.

Meet Yusif

Until his 40s, Yusif worked at a confectionery factory and lived with his wife and daughter Elena. Sadly, a house fire destroyed his home and took his wife’s life. With Elena’s help, Yusif slowly rebuilt the house. Tragically, a few years later Elena died from a haemorrhage at just 34 years old, leaving Yusif completely alone.

As his health worsened in his late 50s - suffering from a herniated disc, high blood pressure, and a leg injury - Yusif was forced to stop working and rely on a disability pension of £200* per month. Much of this went towards medication and utilities, leaving almost nothing for food. For years he survived by growing vegetables in his garden, until the pain became too severe to continue.

One day, Yusif noticed a small business card for the Men’s Crisis Centre at a bus stop. Curious and desperate, he called and they offered help.

It was discovered that his injured leg required immediate amputation. The news came as a shock, but Yusif faced it with courage and he is learning to walk again using a frame.

Today, after a year at the centre, life looks very different. Yusif is surrounded by caring volunteers and other men who understand hardship and loss. He shares meals, enjoys conversations, plays chess, and is beginning to rediscover hope. Most importantly, he is no longer alone.

Equipment such as walking frames (£23*), rolling walkers (£50*), walking sticks (£5*), and wheelchairs (£150*) helps residents like Yusif regain independence and dignity. As more elderly and disabled people come to the crisis centres, the need for these essential items continues to grow.

If you would like to help provide practical support for people like Yusif, please consider making a donation and letting us know it is for the crisis centres.

Sometimes a second chance begins with something as small as a business card at a bus stop.
